A Machine Tool Builder Lights Up with Laser

Cladders and ASIC-200Ò

A machine tool builder found new ways to create more value and benefits for its customers using laser light to add metal to worn areas of industrial turbine blades. Machine tool engineers like the way open architecture PC-based control systems allow a number of separate functions to be combined into a single computer.

 Customer Requirements

In the machine tool builder's new laser cladder products, a vision system sees the turbine blade, calculates a path for the laser, guides it through its motion and then checks to verify the operation.

 The ASIC-200 Solution

ASIC-200 performs the functions previously done by dedicated CNC's. Motion control functions requiring hard real-time control are performed on a motion coprocessor card running its own hard real time operating system. The user interfaces with all control components of the system, including the coprocessor, through the Windows NT based ASIC-200 control software.

The power of ASIC-200 in this application is that the control computer integrates the functions of CAD, CAM, 3-D vision, Virtual NC and machine diagnostics. It also verifies the finished product with CMM techniques.

 Customer Rewards

Machine tool engineers like ASAP's Windows NT based software because it integrates motion control (G-code) directly in the SFC and ladder diagram languages. ASIC-200 control software benefits customers in machine tool applications by saving time and using fewer resources.

OEM's Opportunities Heat Up with ASIC-200Ò PC-Based Control

A major manufacturer of industrial combustion systems is finding new opportunities since they offer ASIC-200 control software on their process heating equipment. Traditionally, a large part of the value this OEM delivers came from the process knowledge of their engineering sales force. Customers requested that they also provide packaged control systems.

 Customer Requirements

To meet customer demand and create a stronger competitive advantage, this OEM sought a way to package their process knowledge with hardware in the form of an intelligent control system. They wanted to embed their process control algorithms while protecting the program code. They also wanted to offer more modular systems, utilizing a variety of PLC I/O structures. Being able to interface with any I/O without having to re-engineer every time is a major advantage of ASIC-200.

 The ASIC-200 Solution

In a typical burner application, the OEM supplies equipment and controls for several heating zones with 4 to 6 burners per zone. The system controls as many as 40 PID loops. ASIC-200's built-in PID function provides these controls. A combination of SFC, structured text and ladder logic implements the control schemes. ASIC-200 creates software modules, allowing for flexible system configurations. Sections of program containing the OEM's process knowledge are password protected.

Using ASIC-200's capability to create arrays, a standard system is set up. To configure a system for an application, the OEM sets the number of heating zones and the number of burners per zone. The customer's I/O choice is determined, and the system is ready. Datalogging is accomplished using the ASIC-200 file I/O option. Ten to twenty days of detailed data are kept, along with daily statistical analyses. These reports are available for further analysis and reporting in Excel, Access or other popular business programs.

Customer Rewards

For this OEM, the strength of Windows NT as an operating system was a key part of their decision to buy PC-based control. Because Windows NT runs all programs in a protected mode and offers excellent security, it was the operating system of choice for soft logic control. The OEM now offers to its customers a flexible control system with the I/O of their choice at a competitive price.

ASIC-200Ò Controls Tire Engraving Machinery

ASIC-200 now controls a 4-axis CNC engraver of tire molds used to cast letters and graphics on the sidewalls of car and truck tires. ASIC-200 provides complete real-time control combining logic and motion control in one Windows NT package.

 Customer Requiremnts:

The company decided last year to build its own CNC engraving machine because it couldn't find appropriate mold-making equipment to produce molds for tire manufacturers. Company engineers found that hardware and software issues were the biggest stumbling blocks. Most of the problems, however, stemmed from the fact that the designers were trying to use proprietary computer systems.

 The ASIC-200 Solution

Motion programming is accomplished via industry standard RS-274 G-codes and Structured Text. ASIC-200's patented techniques seamlessly synchronize logic and motion control.

The man machine interface (MMI) for the engraver is written by ASAP in Visual Basic. Controls enhanced with OCX and Active X directly interface with the real-time machine control software. The MMI is designed to constantly display updated machine status and to receive commands from the machine operator.

ASIC-200 graphical editors are used to create and debug control application programs that control the operation of the entire machine. Through its enhancements to IEC-1131, ASIC-200 seamlessly integrates the CNC motion control functionality with the logic control programs. ASIC-200 provides a real-time control system under Windows NT that updates all the motion commands, sensor inputs and actuator outputs more than 50 times a second. A PC-based motion controller card from Delta Tau assures accurate closed loop motor control and motion command interpolation at sub-millisecond time intervals.

 Customer Rewards

The success of this tire sidewall mold engraving application demonstrates the ability of ASIC-200's open architecture to bring a variety of real-time control functions, multiple industrial I/O systems and powerful Windows based application programs together harmoniously on a single PC based hardware platform.
